review 1: Hold The Dark is a very short novel, just under 200 pages long. The blurb on the back of the book promises a great story, but for me the actual plot does not live up to what is promised on the cover. It appears that children are being taken from this small Alaskan town by wolves, and the mother of one of the lost children contacts an expert, asking him to come and try to find out what has happened. The father of the missing boy is a soldier, he returns home and is very angry. This is where the whole story turns on it's head, and to say much more would be to give away the whole plot. There is no doubt that the author has a way with words, he can create a dark and explosive storyline, but for me, there was something missing. I can't really put my finger on it, just that I fel... moret kind of let down by the outcome of the story.
review 2: A short, violent book with a great deal of imaginative, if strained imagery. I've read a number of this kind recently, books which make me squirm with discomfort when the obvious marks of a Teacher of Creative Writing appear. The best part of this book is the author's evocation of the terrible Alaska winter. The not so good parts are the gratuitous violence (gratuitous because the motivation for most of it is not provided in the story and so it seems that the author must have added it just to make the book more saleable) and the strain for arty images at the expense of clarity. I found the whole thing overwrought, but those who like this sort of mash-up of violence and quasi-mysticism will obviously not agree. less

At this point in 2014, Hold The Dark is the 'book of the year' for me. Superb.
