The Doll Shop
review 1: A very sweet historical book that would be good for lower-grade girls looking for an enjoyable, easier level read with illustrations. Loosely based on the early life of world-famous dollmaker Madame Alexander, this is the story of Anna, a girl who lives with her immigrant parents & two sisters on Manhattan's Lower East Side, where her father runs a doll repair shop. The girls enjoy spending time in the shop, especially in order to play with their three favorites, broken dolls who remain unclaimed by their owners. But life threatens to become very difficult for the family when World War I breaks out - even though America is not yet involved in the fight, embargoes against Germany mean that Anna's father is no longer able to import the doll parts he uses in his repair. Anna ... morehas an idea, but will it save the family's business? This story will be absolutely adored by girls who love dolls, & would be especially appreciated by those who are into the American Girl collection because of its connections to American history.
review 2: This is a sweet little fictional story with the beginnings of Madame Alexander dolls as its loose base. Three sisters help their parents' doll repair shop business, but as world war I begins and they know that they will no longer be able to order parts from Germany, they have to be inventive, and decide to turn their hand at dollmaking instead of doll repair. Meanwhile, three little dolls whose owners have never returned to claim them are claimed instead by the young girls, who have never had new dolls of their own. Cute illustrations. less
