review 1: First, it was great seeing a diverse cast of characters. Not only are they friends but the three of them also work together to overcome adversity. This compelling urban fantasy young adult novel is brimming with historic details and loaded with suspense. The interaction between the characters is realistic, even if the bird is fantasy. Although the story was a bit short for my taste, the author did tie up all loose ends. Unfortunate for this reader, the ending was too rushed but for young adults, who the novel is geared for, it may be just right. If you're looking for a young adult fantasy novel, pick up Ship of Souls! A quick entertaining read that I'm confident most young readers will enjoy.
review 2: This is a beautiful and moving book about loss, death... more, grieving and surviving that pain. D. only had his mother growing up but cancer took him. He was graced to be quickly taken into a caring faster home. He excels at math which leads him to tutoring a popular boy and making his first friends. He also finds and injured bird that leads him on a journey to set free the souls of slaves long trapped by their deaths from returning home. It becomes D.'s mission to guide them to the ship that will set them free and through this he allows his grief to be free and finds a peace of sorts to keep moving forward. Magic is everywhere, you only to be open to it. less
