review 1: 3.5-3.75 stars. The death of a young Saudi aristocrat is investigated by Nayir, a friend of the family who is a desert guide, and a young woman Katya, betrothed to an adopted brother in the family. Nayir's character is somewhat inconsistent, with strong cultural beliefs about women, who manages to work with Katya in solving the mystery. Katya's character is much better, helping to show the deep gender divide in Saudi culture, and then make herself successful in contravention thereof. The cultural and setting aspects of the book were better than the murder mystery.
review 2: Wonderful. If I could give it more than 5 stars I would. This is the story of Nayir ash-Sharqi, a Palestinian living in Jeddah, who investigates the death of sixteen year old Nouf ash-Sh
... morerawi, daughter of a wealthy Saudi dynasty. The plot itself is richly woven with a well drawn cast of characters but, for me, the insight into the Saudi society made the book unputdownable. This is a debut novel, and I hope there are many more to come from Zoe Ferraris. less
