review 1: I love a good mystery and always choose a few for summer reading. This one was ingenious, original, captivating... The characters were well developed. The story was engrossing. The setting, Jeddah in Saudi Arabia was exotic and interesting. It is a setting I know and have experienced first-hand. The setting was the reason I chose the book, the story and the characters was the reason I raced through it to the very end. I especially liked the balance the author created between traditional and modern lives in a strictly Muslim country. The struggle to live in the modern world was real with people taking different paths in a truly disparate society. I loved this book.
review 2: This is a terrific murder mystery that takes place in Saudi Arabia. This story
... morewas filled with cultural conflict, but most importantly, informed the reader of the difficulties that face women in a society that not only minimizes them, but has the potential to inflict pain and suffering to those who do not adhere strictly to the religious laws that are strictly enforced. I appreciated that the main character, Katya and Nayir, devout muslims themselves, pursued the case despite their conflicted feelings regarding the mores of Islam. I want to read more in this series! less
