review 1: I did like this book. It may not be one of my favourites, but does have good qualities worth reading and will appeal to many readers. Firstly I love the characters. The character development throughout the story was well written and believable and set at a good pace. From the beginning Karou is sceptical and scared about all the supernatural events that unfold around her. But as the story unfolds and new characters come into play we see her slowly develop and become a more confident heroine. When Shinobu appears, a romantic sub plot is added to the story. This isn't a strong teen romance book, which to me is a good thing as I don't like heavy teen romances and prefer relations ships to develop throughout the story as oppose to some books that get half way through and the t... morewo main characters are already confessing their undying love. So this book was for me, as the romance was a sub plot to the main goal of the story which was to rescue Karous best friends sister from and evil, hungry cat demon. All the while trying to uncover the secrets to her family's magical Katana. I like the use of Japanese names and customs which really authenticates the story and shows the author know what she's talking about. I think the reason why I didn't give the story a higher rating was I would of preferred a bit more action. But that's more a personal preference to the type of books I like. Overall good book. I've already recommended it to my sister who loves anime/manga and Japanese culture. And some friends who I know will like it.
review 2: I had ridiculously high hopes for this book having loved the writing of this author for a long time and was slightly disappointed in the begining at the slow start. However, wow did it pick up the pace, amazing characters as always. So despite my expectations making it easy to initially be a little disappointed, this book earns a 4.4/5 from me. Can't wait for the next one and how Mio's parents are going to react. less
