review 1: I heard about this mystery novel set in Sandomierz, Poland on NPR and first ordered a sample on my Kindle. It was good enough to convince me to buy. The setting is exotic for an American like me, while also showing that certain elements of small-town life are universal. The plot moves at a good pace and the characters are real and believable. Prosecutor Szacki is an interesting protagonist - good but flawed. The theme of Poland's history of anti-semitism makes for a compelling backdrop to a series of murders. ... moreen a corpse is found outside the archives and Szacki gets more excitement than he bargained for. The modern murders seem to connect with the Jewish population and events of the mid 20th century. Great story with plenty of twists and the usual tortured hero. Hope there will be more of these books translated into English. less
