review 1: It's been a while since I've read a crime story I could not entirely predict the ending soon after the beginning. It's an excellent read. Very well written, great translation (from what I can tell) and an intriguing story. I do think that the book is particularly enjoyable if you know Warsaw well. To follow prosecutor Szacki through the city can not be half as interesting if you do not know the city. If you like crime, then it's a great book to read also before your first visit to Warsaw. I definitely want to continue reading about Teodor Szacki.
review 2: I think this is the first Polish book I've read. A crime thriller set in Warsaw and clearly influenced by the Rebus stories and other British crime fiction. I thought it was well plotted and I enjoyed the tal... moree, though it became overly complex towards the end. I had to write all the Polish names down as I went along, to keep track of who was who. There were strong themes of family relationships, especially father - daughter bonds, and suicide featured a few times, with the implication that sometimes this is the best solution to some problems. The story also gave a sense of things having been buried from the old Soviet days. It’s described as a novel with a strong sense of place, but this didn’t come across for me; I didn’t get any feeling for Warsaw as a place, apart from the street names and the fact that there are few pleasant areas in the city. It was disappointing that most of the characters were not developed to any great depth, and there was a constant reference to the female characters in a sexual way. Weaknesses aside, I intend to read the sequel as I found it an entertaining read, albeit lightweight. less
