review 1: I'm rather torn over this book. On the one hand I think there was a gripping occult thriller story lurking in there, and I did keep reading to find out what happened. But the writing style was a huge problem for me: over long, repetitive, and in dire need of more active editing. I ended up skipping big chunks, as the book kept saying the same thing over and over again at length. I think a third could easily have been chopped off the page count, and maybe even more. There are also a lot of topographical mistakes in the St Andrews town setting: places and streets wrongly named (though sometimes correct a few pages later - what was the editor doing?), and geography that just didn't work (like an apparently more two-way Market Street). These mistakes took me out of the book, a... morend could have been avoided if a local had proofread it more. Yet I enjoyed it, despite this, hence my score. Though I'm not sure I'd recommend it to others, especially other St Andrews locals.
review 2: I found some of the reviews of this book to be outrageous and unfounded. I've become weary of reviews, and after this I will most likely ignore any I come across in the future. I really enjoyed Nevill's style. His descriptive language is vivid and stunning and thought the plot to be unique and well thought out. It is worth the read if you enjoy this genre, just give it a chance. Looking forward to reading the rest of his work! less

Got to 60 pages and gave up. Couldn't get into it at all.
