review 1: Really torn on this one. On the one hand Nevill is a master at creepiness. His intricate descriptions of the characters, settings, marionettes, taxidermy, and dioramas in this book are nothing less than horrifying. On the other hand, the main character was unlikable, and the plot was predictable and dragged a bit. I like Adam Nevill's writing enough that I will still recommend this book as a good read BUT I suggest you start with The Ritual which has a much faster pace and strangly enough also includes small, creepy, altered figures. I think we know what scares Mr. Nevill the most.
review 2: I thought I'd give Nevill another go, after reading (and not enjoying)Apartment 17.) The cover blurb is patently false; Nevill's writing is *nothing* like King's, which is
... morereadable even when it's not very good. Nevill is more like a poor man's Ramsey Campbell, whose best work by far is short stories. This might actually have worked as one of Hammer's new novellas, but it's not getting anywhere so I'm just going to skip to the end. less
