review 1: This book was spectacular! Greatest piece of horror I've ever experienced! The first half was a better, gorier version of Blair Witch Project/Slender kind of horror. And the second half slows down a bit to show us the darker sides of humanity and explain the ritualistic society that spawns such darkness. Put together, the book is brilliant and brutal fun for anyone who loves some good backwoods horror.
review 2: This is a taut, well-paced adventure horror novel that draws inspiration from the classic weird fiction of Algernon Blackwood and Arthur Machen. Four old friends harboring personal tensions with one another get lost on a hiking trip in a forest full of creepy ancient altars and whatnot. Horrors ensue. The novel is especially successful throughout part I
... more, but not so much through part II, which, for me, and for at least one other person I know, nearly went off the rails. Without saying too much, the transition between parts I and II was really tonally and stylistically jarring. I got over it eventually and finished the novel fine, but in almost all respects the first part was far superior to the second. less
