review 1: I found this very interesting and engaging. Sure, the different words for things was ... well, different, but I didn't mind because I could understand what was meant in context. What I did have to keep reminding myself was, "different world-different rules." As an alternate-earth society, there was plenty that was explained, but plenty that was not explained, and that's where I had issues, because the setting is not clearly defined. But I love the characters! I absolutely adore Ean and it makes sense to me why Batu raised him the way he did. His inquisitiveness is enjoyable and he shows his love like a dragon would, because that's how he was raised. I also just loved how Adam accepted Ean's differences and his love. They taught each other so much about each other's d... moreifferent worlds and that was really neat to see.Brian? Well ... undecided there, but I don't know that the sub-plot about Adam's father was particularly well done at the end. I think it would have been better to just have left that alone, because it really stuck out during the climax, but the foreshadowing was neat. I liked how the news of the trial and such were sprinkled throughout the story.I did really enjoy the back and forth flow of time. I wasn't confused at all and it really seemed to make the past more dream-like, and whose childhood isn't seen through those rose-tinted glasses? The flashbacks made a vibrant contrast to the harsh, tension-filled present of the story. And can I just say that the ending killed me? There was plenty of build-up and tension and I got so caught up in what was going to happen next that when I saw the author's bio at the end I was startled, and not in a good way. It was like there was no end and that was incredibly frustrating. All in all, an engaging read with wonderful characters (and I'm looking forward to possibly learning more about Batu in the other books of the series) and a really delightful depiction of love between two very different people.
review 2: 3.75 StarsComplex, edgy, dark, disturbing, compelling. These are all words that can be used to describe this book. The worldbuilding is pretty amazing but at the same time pretty confusing.I had an issue with the time lines. At the beginning of each chapter we get a scene from Adam's past (in italics) but the thing is - often the characters in present day or the main story mention events from the past so it was kind of repeating itself. I just think the italics are unnecessary. The ending was also way to abrupt for me. I have a tonne of questions and I do not think its fair to the reader to end it like it did. I cannot say to much because it would be MAJOR spoilers.I respect the author writing something very different. I just felt that instead of trying to be artistic (with timeline changes etc and the ending) the author should have made it a bit more simplistic. The ending pretty much sucked, if she had wrote and epilogue I would have game this 5 stars. less
