review 1: This book was like driving through the Alps. It twisted and turned along with stomach dropping dips. There was a great deal of truth in the subplots and how one can only really depend on those around them but so much. Everyone has their own understanding of what's going on, how it affects them, and how they can best survive. Mrs. Burke explores this without flinching - even though it's not pretty. I particularly enjoyed how mistaken communications deepened the angst. In real life forthrightness might be the best policy, but not in a good suspense plot line. Mrs. Burke allows us to see human nature unburnished.
review 2: library audiobook, [which means no investment in finishing.] reader did well. Lots of New York background. Considerable plot twisting. But also
... more stuff which was too unlikely to credit. Can't point out the plot problems without being a spoiler. But it's not a spoiler to say that the activities of Susan Hauptman while hidden are never explained. Relationship to McKenna and her husband seemed unmotivated. less

If you like suspense...this is a "won't know the whole story to the end" kinda book!
