review 1: A truly great opening chapter, one which leaves the reader with a clue that is almost frustratingly overlooked as the case is worked. In the meantime Burke keeps tossing balls in the air, puzzles and pieces which may or may not ultimately matter or converge, each lulling us from suspecting she has plenty more in store. Hatcher, Rogan and Donovan may not quite have "the stuff" to ever hit a 5-star level, but this is fine, fine work from an ever-improving author.
review 2: The book started off as a great novel full of suspense, drama and jaw-dropping moments as the story began to unfold. It was well on it's way to a possible 5 star rating but the ending is what ultimately gave it an abrupt "are you kidding me???" stop. The ending could have definitely gone in ano
... morether direction. Maybe then I would have the feeling of satisfaction at spending the time I took in reading the book. less
