Escapar desta seria, talvez, acordar. Mas não pode acordar: está acordado".
review 2: What a great little book that packs a "human" touch. I first read a review of his new book in the New York Times Book Review and they referred to this gem of a book that lived up to their recommendation. The story is simple. One day the mother of eight year old Daniela goes to her drawing class and never comes home. Her step-father Julian has been telling her "stories of the trees" to help her get to sleep and he reflects upon both his live and her mother's (Veronica) and how everyone became intertwined. He teaches literature at school Monday to Friday) but on Sunday's he is a writer. Nice reality. Fast forward thirty years when Daniela reads the book that Julian wrote thirty years earlier. The book is tender, compassionate, never smaltzy and full of reflections of being a parent. One of my favourite lines is "Su verdadera profesion es crear palabras y olvidarlas en el ruido" (His true profession is creating words and forgetting them in their noise). He also ties in his previous book "Bonzai" keeping a post-modern approach By making it interesting and with lots of word play. The entire book is beautiful from the beginning to the end. less

Very Bolano-like, but without the disappearances undone.
