review 1: A masterful short novel within a novel with not a wasted word. It is clever without being clever-clever, never patronising the reader or over complicating things, but remaining intelligent, thought provoking and perceptive from beginning to end. I love how memory, time, place and childhood is evoked in prose and unexpected conversations, and how the author (or more accurately, the author's character) explores the process of writing. A gem.
