review 1: Alejandro Zambra is magical. Not "magical realism," but pure magic. His two books available in English (this one and the also-superb Bonsai) are short, engaging, absorbing reads; his books are tremendously quotable, full of insights and the kind of succinct brilliance that is increasingly rare, yet increasingly powerful. The types of books you read in an hour or two. The types of books that you revisit again, and again, and remember why you like reading in the first place. One of those reasons for me is because some authors make me see things differently. Zambra's one of those authors.I love the way he constructs sentences, every sentence is a story unto itself. Every word is in place, there is no fluff, no extra words:"But that is another story, a minor story, not importa... morent now—although maybe it would be better to follow those false clues: Julián himself would greatly enjoy a half-cocked book full of false clues. It would be undoubtedly better to fall on the floor laughing, or construct an elegant and disdainful sneer. It would be better to close the book, close the books, and to face, all at once, not life, which is very big, but the fragile armor of the present." review 2: Dit is een boek over een jonge docent die wacht tot zijn vrouw weer thuis komt. En dat is het. Als zijn vrouw thuis komt - of niet - houdt het boek op. Dat wordt je beloofd. En daar word je een paar keer aan herinnerd. En daar houdt Alejandro zich ook aan.Het verhaal speelt zich af in de tijd van de discman, las ik ergens. Dus dat is de tijd voor de mobiele telefoons. Want anders zou je elkaar toch even bellen? Op pagina 56 wordt duidelijk dat hij om halfdrie 's nachts een nutteloze reeks telefoontjes heeft gepleegd. Maar dat zijn dan pogingen geweest via de vaste lijn. Want anders was één telefoontje naar haar mobiel toch voldoende geweest? Maar wacht, in diezelfde zin wordt gesproken over een wekker van SpongeBob en die serie wordt pas sinds 2003 door Nickelodeon uitgezonden.Nee, daar gaat het dus helemaal niet om. Waar gaat het dan om? Ik weet het niet. Maar ik vind het mooi hoe hij verleden, heden en een mogelijke toekomst soepeltjes door elkaar husselt. Hoe werkelijkheid en fictie in elkaar overlopen. Met vooruitblikken en een plan. En in parallelle werelden.Hou je dat 300 pagina's vol? Ik in ieder geval niet. Maar dat hoeft ook niet. Zambra weegt zijn woorden heel zorgvuldig af en blijkt op die manier voldoende te hebben aan 100. less
