review 1: I only gave this book 3 stars because I don't feel that the story is quite there. Maybe he could have fleshed it out more, and it is a good effort at combining two timelines; but it doesn't do it for me. The story itself would get 1 or 2 stars at best in my opinions.Where the other stars come from is the writing style. Hemon is at times a poet of prose. He writes sentences that stain the scene into your mind. I'd give him 5 stars on that account. To average it out, 3 stars seems a fair rating for this book.
review 2: “Home is where somebody notices when you are no longer there.”This book is a touching travel account. It describes the journey of a writer, Brik, who sets out to uncover the story behind the murder of a Jewish immigrant, a century ago. Even thou
... moregh the book occasionally gets quite emotional, there are lots of humorous stories scattered throughout the overall plot, which by the way, is a simple one. Scenes are presented to us in such exquisite details, that it could only have been the result of keen observation or an outrageously vivid imagination. You might think I’m exaggerating, so let me give an instance. The main characters Brik and Rora are waiting beside a playground. They see a tall girl score a goal with her head. There’s a beautiful description of how she would remember the names of all the girls who had congratulated her on that day except for one’s. And twenty years from now, she would ask her friends, the name of that girl, but no one would remember, yet she would never forget that girl. There are lots of lovely quotes to remember.“The old film of common past disintegrates when exposed to the light of new life.”“We dreamt of light, but hoped for darkness.”“The whole life, a dash between the two arbitrary numbers.” “If you find yourself asking, ‘How did I get here?’ it probably means you are living a life worth living.”And there are lots of beautiful pictures at the beginning of each chapter. Only after you finish reading a chapter will you find the reason for that particular picture being at the beginning of it. After reading the book, I think I’ve grown a deeper sense of appreciation for the trivial affairs of the world. This book may have a different effect on each person. So read and find out for yourself. Good luck. less

Got a bit lost at first from the switching back and forth between time periods
