review 1: An entertaining blend of futuristic clash of cultures, romance and intrigue. The author's blurb at the front of the book noted that the concept for this story was dragged into the future. It is obvious that the story draws on the Soviet's unsuccessful invasion of Afghanistan in everything from climate and terrain right down to the Russian names of the invaders who are members of the Doctrine a philosophy similar to Communism that puts the goals of the state above the needs of the individual. The Doctrine is opposed by the Alliance. And while the two avoid direct conflict, the Alliance expands a great deal of effort covertly thwarting the ever expansion-minded Doctrine. It comes as no surprise that the individually minded Alliance has no problem with homosexuality while the ... morecollective Doctrine considers it a heinous crime requiring reprogramming. The love story that unfolds between Sergei the young Doctrine officer and Mike the Alliance covert operative who targets him is unexpectedly tender. There is a great deal of sex which is used to explore the men's emotional and mental state. The inevitable betrayals go to a very dark place. Which brings me to the story's main weakness, the aftermath and resolution which were too pat and simply not believable. Still a very entertaining read overall.
review 2: Underwhelmed. Sadly. The flying lizards really solidified it for me. (?)The love story wasn't really developed. Sergei and Mike were not lovable or likeable. The storyline has hazy remnants of SF with none of the climax. The boys have eerily similar Dan & Vadim moments ... right down to the sex on a dirty cot in a dirty hovel. Holes in the story left the HFN ending flat. Kinda loved Nikishin tho. He was a crazy Bastard...and would have loved some insight on his relationship with Ulyanov. less
