review 1: The Dark Soul (quintet?) is deliciously dark, morally ambiguous to the max, and written so very, very well. *SPOILERS*: Killers who get off on pain? Husbands who cheat on their wives? Cannot tolerate incest in your books? By the time each of those bumps in the road gets hit, you’ll either decide it’s not for you, or get wound deeper in the story, because the way it is written, and in the brutal and luxurious world in which these characters live, it all makes perfect perverse sense. Enjoy trying to work out exactly what makes a character tick? Even when an explanation is given at the end of the book? Silvio Spadaro, sex on legs, is the assassin for you. He’s probably one of the more intriguing, alluring and ambiguous characters I’ve come across, and he does wicked t... morehings to the equilibrium of mob boss Stefano Marino. As in, Stefano loves his wife Donata, he’s never been unfaithful to her, nor attracted to a man before, but Silvio is a lethal force that not even Stefano can resist (nor the rest of us, I’m guessing). And no, Donata is not a downtrodden wife, which would have made this intolerable. She is as powerful as her husband, their marriage is a partnership and the way in which her own relationship with Silvio plays out balances it all. I read this book in its serialized version, but for simplicities sake am posting this for the collected volume. Voinov’s writing has a sparse elegance and an acknowledgement of the rawness of human experience that makes for compulsive reading, for me, anyways. It may not be everyone’s cuppa, but the warnings are all there. Absolutely worth trying
review 2: I didn't expect this book to be so...loaded. It's full of mature content. I thought it's going to be just a story about a mafiozo who is gay and tries to hide it, because otherwise he will be killed, but it was one big sex story. I felt like it was two stories, one was just describing sex scenes and other one was the actual story of Stefano and his problems. If it was just the latest one I would have given this book a star more, because it was really good. So, before purchasing this book, think about it very carefully. less
