review 1: 3.5 stars. It was only a matter of time before this series tackled Ancient Rome, and it did it in a pretty great fashion. The idea of a multi-national group of people going back in time from The End of Days to try and change the course of history was fun, but then I spent a decent chunk of time cringing (as, I suspect, I was supposed to) when the Vice-President of the US took over and decided that they should announce themselves by blasting Born in the USA on the way into Rome, and that they should inform Caligula that they were there to teach him about "The American way". Because UGH UGH UGH UGH UGH. Mostly because it was a multi-national group and why the hell should America get to be in charge, but partly because the Vice-President (who was an asshat) clearly had no ide... morea of how much of the modern world came from Roman practices and ideals. History: it's important, kids. So yeah, I liked seeing the team explore Ancient Rome. But I could have done without the douchey Vice-President of America Will Rule the World proportions. And I especially could have done without a robot that looks and talks like Spongebob Squarepants, because that is officially the WORST IDEA OF ALL TIME.
review 2: The sixth installment in this time travelling adventure, and things are starting to become far less fun and much more serious. This outing also breaks the mould again – rather than Liam heading back to fix things whilst the others wait and watch, they all end up jumping about time all over the place. Now it seems as though the secret is out and things are beginning to ramp up. Not just in terms of them as an agency, but within as well – Maddy finally decided to open up to her friends, which was quite refreshing! What I have found now that the story is starting to twist and turn more and more, is that I have less patience for the action in the differing timeline. There’s a part of me that thinks, you know, this timeline is bound to be erased any minute now, why do I need to read extensive pages about some Romans fighting? It turns out those Romans are from Scarrow’s brother’s book which made me feel a bit guilty. I love a crossover handled well, and this was done expertly. Time travelling helps with that kind of thing.Regardless, the above is not really a complaint but more of a back-handed compliment that the overriding story is so intriguing to me that I just want to get more of that. Who is this Waldstein and what the heck is going on? less
