review 1: I'm glad that I found this series; it's not something I would have thought to try except for goodreads. It's pretty much a straight forward murder mystery dressed up with Aztec myth, but the world is well drawn and learning more about the Aztec pantheon was fascinating. de Bodard's work reminds me of Martha Wells who is one of my favorite writers of all time. I'm looking forward to spending some more time reading up on the various myths and gods to help fill in the gaps.
review 2: A fascinating first novel, with a strong sense of place and of consequences. Peoples actions matter to other people in ways that seem real, and allows the minor characters to appear less like pawns and have their own motivations and concerns. Though billed as a murder mystery, the unu... moresual setting and scale of the eventual plot overshadow that to some extent, but not in any harmful way. Will be interesting to observe Acatl as he develops in subsequent books. less
