review 1: This was a refreshing change of pace- a murder mystery set in the ancient Aztec world, with a lot of magic and old gods creating strife. The lead character (the High Priest of the Dead - thus Servant of the Underworld) is quite likeable, and the story line interesting. The only thing I didn't like was all the blood sacrifices that were needed to fuel the magic. Poor little animals. Otherwise, really good.
review 2: Amazing! A detective story set in the Aztec Empire with a bit of magic and a lot of mythic storytelling? Count me in. I am only going to review this one book but there are 3 books in this series called Obsidian and Blood. All three books are different but have characters that continue throughout. I can't say enough good about Aliette de Boda
... morerd. She has managed to create an historical epic and fantasy novel like no other. The characters are well-drawn, with all of the appropriate human fallibilities. The adventure is spot on as well, though the book is mostly concerned with dialogue and interactions between players. When the action comes, it's breathtaking. The research that went into the series is daunting. I loved reading and seeing all of the names from the time period, names like Acamapichtli and Ceyaxochitl. There's something about that "tl" combo that I love. Culture is at the forefront of the setting as our hero Acatl navigates the political landscape in his bid to find justice. Wrangling peasants and politicians alike, every one has a story to tell. And once you start one book, you won't stop until you've read them all. Bravo! less

Tremendously fun, this Aztec police procedural somehow seems modern while you read it.

Murder mystery but set in Aztec times. Okay but more fiction than fantasy.
