review 1: I picked this novella up a year ago, but failed to finish it until now. I am glad that I took the time to get to the end. De Bodard, a computer engineer in addition to being an author, mixes southeast Asian traditional cultural values with space opera. This book plays with the themes of kinship and ancestor worship in a deep-space future. In it individuals are slaves to the wishes of aunts and cousins. There is little agency a person can exercise due to rigid hierarchical structures. The book explores a future where ancestors (as A.I.) can advise their descendants through mental implants. Best of all, the story is saturated with examples of the importance of aesthetics and poetry in everyday life.

... moregue set on a distant space station, part of an empire that encompasses many inhabited worlds and space outposts. The characters are interestingly of Vietnamese descent. Frankly, I had a hard time following the plot; I don’t know if this is part of a series or a novel excerpt, but there seemed to be background information that was missing. The writing style is excellent. less
