review 1: Such an unusual, smart book. Told in the first person, we see Rosa, her daughter, and her granddaughter from Rosa's skewed, perhaps deranged, perspective. Rosa firmly believes she is the best at everything (or that if given opportunity, she can become the best), that she makes the right decisions for herself and everybody around her. She's a character that I hated and cheered for at the same time.
review 2: Tartars, Caucasus, oh my! The story is a concentration of one Rosa the matron, caretaker of her Tartar family during the Soviet Union and beyond. A mysterious birth by her daughter Sulfia punctuates this authority however, and Rosa's attitude and upbringing permeates.
