review 1: This is a short story, not a book. It is also extremely badly written. Besides have no developed characters, a plot that made no sense, and very little explanation of the who, what, where and why of the story, it was also riddled with inconsistencies. For example, Lawrence says his brother is not a sorcerer. But, later the book refers to both of them as sorcerers. The love story is a gay Dom/sub couple and even the sex was badly written. Nothing is believable. Nothing is developed. And the main character is unlikeable. Don't waste your time.
review 2: While obviously everyone has their own preferences I don't quite understand the negative reviews.Yes, the author goofed up on the werekin references when Laurence had no way of knowing that yet, but I regard that ... moreas nothing more than typos. A little confusing but certainly not worse than the atrocious copy-editing issues I've found in books by other authors.To me, this was a sweet story, quite solid in the context of the author's other works, and it completely satisfied me. As usual it works as the first of a series (pretty much what you'd expect from the Queen of First Volumes), so maybe we'll even get to know more in that regard down the line. In my opinion, though, this story stands by itself.The fact that the action and intrigue elements of the plot were neither intricate nor drawn out is once more a mark of this author's style - and one which I find particularly refreshing. She never draws anything out for the sake of it, neither a sex scene nor a climactic destruction of an adversary. I love that! XD No boredom, even if the cost is an abbreviated story at times.So, yeah. This one? Did not make me giddy but I definitely enjoyed it. less
