review 1: Leaning a little more towards 2.5. I have been looking forward to Saint's story and am both happy and disappointed. I liked Saint's character until he starts opening his mouth about taking back the throne from Vohne. Every time this subject came up my liking of Saint took a dive. Vohne does everything with the good of his people in mind. Saint just wants what is "his". It's not about him thinking he is a better ruler, it comes across much more like a child who has had a toy taken away. Even if they don't really care about the toy, no one else can have it. Maybe that was a failing on the part of the author to express clearly or maybe it is a failing of mine for interpreting it that way. But I was really kind of bummed by the ending. The last few pages suddenly Sai... morent and Vohne are talking about working together for a year and then Saint takes over and Vohne and Kres fly the skies. No no no. I just wasn't satisfied at all with the way it was written. Part of what makes Saint so compelling is the fact that he is just a little on the not-quite-right side and while he isn't a bad guy, in general he tends to lack empathy and compassion. Not really ideal ruler material. He would be much better suited to more action-oriented and/or clandestine-type ventures. Vohne on the other hand was all about taking care of his people and doing what was best and he just worked well as the king, what the heck are he and Kres going to do flying around? (I know, is supposed to be what Kres wanted but if that is so it should have figured a little more into the story, in my opinion.) It made no sense to me, it was like she was putting each couple in the other couple's place. Urgh. *grumbles and whines some more*Also, with the exception of the female Thresl in book one and the nurse in book 5, why were all the females in this series evil? And insane. Ah! And if Saint is still alive and his brother is still alive doesn't that mean that someone else of the same age could still be alive, so why is it that no one knows of Saint, is it just convenience that everyone else that would have remembered him is dead so his brother was able to write him out of history? Maybe I missed something somewhere. Wouldn't be the first time. *sigh*But yeah, before that and in all the previous books I adored Saint and this one started off so well. *stomps off to pout in a corner*
review 2: In this grand finale, Saint's story is told at last. He has searched across the length and breadth of the galaxy, but he has finally found his mate, the elusive Mars. Like many other fans, I have been eager for the telling of this story. As eager as I was, I couldn't have possibly anticipated all the delightful twists this story took. It totally delivered.Saint wants two thing- his mate and his throne. He has found his mate. Now he just needs to persuade him oh so carefully to accept their mating. The chase could be fun.Mars has kept anyone he potentially cares about at a distance since his mission to help the abused Thresls from the illegal fighting rings is dangerous and a mate can be used against him. Saint is a lethal and determined force in his own right so Mars may have finally met his match. At least that is what Saint tells him. While he tries to resist the big Thresl's advances, he also feels concerned about Saint's plans to take back his throne and what that might all entail. They come to an understanding and work together along with Vohne and Kres and Zander and Leo to put down one last fight ring and go for the final solution to who is operating in the shadows against the throne. I was having such a good time reading this one that I was sorry to see the last page. Saint is revealed entirely and I loved what came out into the light. Mars is a good match for him. Saint observes that in other pairings one is generally out in front protecting the other, but in his pairing, he and his mate walk shoulder to shoulder. They are also equals in the bed room too. Saints mate, Mars, has no intention of letting him take control every time. That final battle when their true enemy was revealed was a wonderful shocker. I enjoyed the surprises. So in the end, I thought this was a well done grand finale to the series particularly since it was a long anticipated book that didn't disappoint. less

For such an eagerly anticipated book it felt unfinished and rushed.
