review 1: 3.5 stars. I'm almost finished with the book- where I will update the review -I just had to make sure I wrote the review now while it's clear in my mind. While I LOVE the storyline and the characters, the flow of the information is jarring. The reader starts in the present, is thrust back in the past, reading flashbacks within flashbacks within flashforwards. The reader gets into the rhythm of the story, and then mid-scene will be shown a paragraph about something that happens days or months later, and then they are back in the past where they were, and then will read said event when we get to it in then narration. Mind you, we're already in the past as it is. So while I'm no longer confused after reading 70% of the book because I just threw the timeline out the window and... more decided it didn't matter what the timeline was in the first place. For the flow and ease of the story, starting the novel in the present (as it was) and going back into the past a year prior was an inventive way to release information and to tell the story, but it's the non-linear flow within the past that upsets the balance. I'm engaged with the characters and the story itself. But if I hadn't been, it would have been very easy to DNF the book because of the 'erratic' feel of the flow. Not finishing would be a shame. But even now, I truly don't have a pull to keep me reading, knowing I will be subjected to more of this problem.
review 2: I had this book loaned to me knowing I would probably hate it (after reading the reviews). But I was determined to give it a shot to see if I agreed with the neg reviews. OMG, I couldn't make it through 20% of the book before I was done. I HATED Chase with a passion. And knowing everything (before I started) that happens in this book, I couldn't go on. There is no way I could root for this whiny douche bag to get an HEA at the end. I ended up skipping to 90% to see how it ended and to see if Chase's character's voice changed at all. Nope, still a whiny, self-absorbed, douche bag. To each their own, I guess, but characters like him do not appeal to me at all. less
