review 1: This is a well-researched book by an obviously passionate author. While the ordered listing of grains, herbs and fruits initially suited my natural inclination for organization, I did at times dread turning the page to learn about another obscure herb that may or may not be an ingredient in a famous amaro or other herbal liqueur. Also, the author's research on brewing seems to come from only a few places; the same source is cited at least ten times. Still, there are amusing historical anecdotes, growing tips for the horticulturally inclined, and enough genuine interest to make a good read. While I'm not rushing off to make my own genuine grenadine syrup or tonic water, I'm grateful to have the recipes to do so. Similarly, I'm glad to know the history of some of my fav... moreorite herbs, fruits, and drinks. I definitely liked the book, but I can also see it as dangerous in the hands of a pedantic and talkative amateur "mixologist" in a shiny vest and awful bowler. At least the author didn't recommend custom-cutting those long clear ice cubes.
review 2: I highly recommend this to bartenders and botanists alike.Admittedly, it took me an embarassingly long time to get through, but I really enjoyed it. It reads almost like a textbook, in chapters covering herbs, flowers, trees, etc. and that's what slowed me down. It's just one of those books you have to take slowly because there's so much information to absorb. If you skip just a couple sentences, you're missing out! It's full of great history lessons, folklore, and legends. One thing I loved about it is that it's packed with cocktail recipes. There's one for every plant they cover, which I find very inspiring. I could spend hundreds of dollars because of this book, just trying to follow all of these recipes. It's going to be one of those books I keep on the shelf for actual future reference, not just to look pretty with the fossil collection. less
