review 1: I don't get how this was possibly a finalist for any award. There is so much potential in the plot, but the characters are superficial and unlikeable, and the writing only average. What happens with the teenage son was sadly predictable. Sexual references used for shock value and added nothing else. I was interested enough to keep reading and see how it ended, but not much good I can say beyond that.
review 2: Unforgettable book. A woman, Kathy, and an immigrant family, the Behranis, both assert ownership of an otherwise insignificant house. Legal title is in the family but Kathy, who lost title due to a clerical error compounded by her own failure to take action when notified, insists on pursuing a claim and involves a married police officer who is infatuate
... mored with her. My sympathies are so strongly with the family man who is trying to provide for his family despite his feeble but kindly wife's profligacy and Kathy and Les's drunken, deranged flailing that I can only feel satisfaction at the aftermath of the tragedy when their destructive force is finally caged. less
