review 1: I hadn't read any books by this author in the past, so when our local library offered this, I thought I would give it a try. Inspector Salvo Montalbano is absolutely wonderful and so very Italian. He loves a good meal at his favorite restaurant, Enzo's. He constantly fights the corruption that is so part of the Italian system. In this most recent book, Montalbano is investigating a series of burglaries in homes of the wealthy. In the process, he meets Angelica and is mesmerized by her beauty. Even though she is much too young for him and he is being unfaithful to his girlfriend, Livia, he can't help himself. The burglaries keep on coming, and Montalbano begins to despair that he will never get to the bottom of things. But in the end, of course, he does. This was a lot of ... morefun to read. The bonus at the end is a translation of some of the food that Montalbano's housekeeper makes for him.
review 2: On the whole, I love this series. While Treasure Hunt (the previous entry) was not one of my favourites, I looked forward to reading Angelica's Smile and was not disappointed. Every time I open one of these books, it's like being reunited with an old friend.Mr. Camillieri provides the reader with not only a mystery to unravel, but an affectionate and engaging glimpse into the daily life and people of Sicily. His Inspector Montalbano is a wonderful character, full of earthy charm, with a tendency towards the dramatic, but also a man with a world-weary perspective, one who can understand and even empathize (at least some of the time) with the people he deals with day in and day out. The reader is also privy to how Montalbano's mind - and heart - work, flaws and all.If you're new to the series, you should start with the first book. As the series progresses, it takes on more of an elegiac tone as Montalbano enters the autumn of his years and must confront his own mortality. This doesn't diminish the series, in fact, it makes it richer and all the more addictive. less
