review 1: When I saw the title, "Jesus Freaks: Sins of the Father", I admit I was hesitant. Let me explain a bit why. I grew up in a very strict religious home. For as long as I can remember, I felt like religion was something forced down my throat, so to speak. Up until I was probably 16, I was faithfully in church every Sunday, attending childrens church as a child, eventually going to youth group as a teen...and when I wasn't in church, I was attending a Christian elementary school for 9 yrs. If you ask me today what I believe, I don't honestly think I could give an answer. My thoughts and beliefs are all over the place. So my first thought upon hearing the title was one where I cringed. I thought at first "glance" that perhaps "Jesus Freaks" was a derogatory/religion bashing typ... moree of book. After reading reviews and excerpts, I found that wasn't the case at all. And for that I was glad. While I am unsure of my own beliefs, I try not to participate in the bashing of others beliefs. Then my thoughts turned to is this going to be one of those "preachy" books? I am not one who will normally sit down and pick up a Christian themed book, so I was unsure how this would be for me. But again, after reading reviews and seeing friends rave about the book, I knew I had to read it - that I had to give it a chance for myself. I started reading it yesterday and finished it today. I sat down tonight at supper and told my husband I had finished another book (he knows I love to read). He asked me if I knew the author and I told him I did - I had won an autographed copy of one of her previous books and it had just arrived a couple days ago. He asked me what I thought of it and I told him I didn't know. He said that it sounded like a good book cause it left me thinking. And you know, he was right. It has left me thinking. I remember growing up there were times I felt like a fraud - at church when I was around my Christian friends trying to fit in with them and then outside of church with my "regular" friends and trying to fit in with them. And honestly, looking back, I don't think I ever accomplished fitting in with either group. I was always on the fringe. A phoney, if you will. I don't know though I have any more answers about my beliefs today after reading "Jesus Freaks" but I am left thinking over things and anytime a book leaves you thinking, that is a good thing. "Jesus Freaks" is the story of Kennedy Sawyer, a freshman at an evangelical college - the very college where her dad is affiliated - the dad who she has no relationship with - the dad who signed all his rights away when she was born. Kennedy choose this school in order to find out more about her dad, but in doing so, she learns so much more about herself. "Jesus Freaks" isn't just about a young girl going off to college, but the family dynamic in all forms, parental relationships, finding yourself, etc. I am anxious to read the next book and hope to learn more about Kennedy and her new fond relationship with her father. I was bummed to see this book come to an end...another great work by Andrea Randall.
review 2: I quite enjoyed this. A story of a girl struggling with her faith, as well as how her birth father fits into her life. I liked that it wasn't disrespectful to any religion, yet showed the two sides to how a person can approach their worship - some are fervent, some are dedicated yet flexible and some are just beginning their journey. Sometimes it was tricky to follow some of it due to not experiencing any church or strong Christian teaching, but the author did a good job to explain and I found it very interesting to learn about this world. I'll definitely keep reading the series. less
