review 1: On my way out of the library today, I passed the new releases display and I simply could not resist when I saw the cover of this absolutely delightful picture book of kittens and cubs from a variety of world zoos. While this book could easily be a 5 minute read, I can almost guarantee that you will want to spend more time with these incredible cats. Hats off to the photographers who perfectly captured these kittens and cubs in all their glory. Each shot speaks volumes. It would be too simple to describe this book as cute. The expressions are incredibly varied and capture so much. For example, in one photo, you can observe the sharp and focused concentration of the endangered web-toed fishing cats of Southeast Asia. It's hard to pick favorites in this collection but somethi... moreng about Darius the leopard stole my heart. I couldn't help but be reminded of the sociobiological advantage of the "cute, sweet" faces of infants and the reasons why we are drawn to such photographs. I tended to prefer some of the more serious looking cats and it was interesting to observe the already apparent differences in siblings photographed together. I was quite pleased that this book introduced me to at least half a dozen cats that I had never heard of such as the Iriomote cat, Pampas cat, Guina, and Jaguarundi to name a few. Some of these cats have rarely been photographed and are critically endangered. Like other readers, I would have liked a bit more information on each of the species of wild cats and while the birthdates of the cats are included, I would have found the age at the time of photograph to be more interesting information. The book piqued my interest in several of the cat species and I will definitely seek out additional information. The author's discuss conservation efforts and challenges and part of the book's proceeds to go to conservation efforts. I would highly recommend this book for children and adults.
review 2: I might die from the cuteness. Really, I read this book in about 15 minutes, but I've already gone though to look at the pictures several more times. And shown them to anyone unlucky enough to be in my general vicinity. I just loved these baby kitties, and it was really interesting to see species of cats rarely seen by people. Even though the focus of this book was on the pictures, I really would have liked more information. Some species, like the jaguar, had several paragraphs worth. Others, like the oncilla, might only have a sentence or two. I wanted more more more! Also, and this is me being particular, there was a lot of inconsistency that an editor should have fixed. (One thing I noticed repeatedly was that sometimes it would say "name" when there was only one baby, but sometimes it would say "names" like it had been copy/pasted from an entry with multiple babies. Sometimes info that appeared in every entry, like the zoo, name, status, etc. would randomly not appear.) Again, I know the focus is on pictures, but surely text editing should be important too. Anyway. I also liked that this book highlights conservation efforts and how they're going, as well as giving info on major wild cat conservation groups. And also donating proceeds to the cause. Hooray for that. I can't wait to go look at these pictures some more. I might need my own copy of this one! less
