review 1: This story was okay but nothing like the magic that is usually Andrew Clements. I was disappointed with it. The action is slow and there is no wit or humor. My biggest complaint is that the story is not completed in this book but continues into the next one with nothing resolved. Having to buy ALL of the books in a series in order to follow the action and learn what happens is a good selling ploy but not ideal for readers who might not be able to do that due to not being able to afford to buy a whole series or even because the series is no longer in print and available. This story involves 2 children: Ben and his friend Jill. Their Massachusetts harbor school was built and started in the late 1700s but it's about to be bulldozed to make way for an amusement park. When the ... morejanitor is injured and later dies he give Ben a gold medallion and swears him to secrecy. The medallion leads the kids on a quest to save the school, following a series of clues set up by some of the original school children of the 1790s. The problem is that they must avoid the new janitor, whom they have determined is a spy for the company who will build the amusement park. As I said, nothing is really resolved in this book.
review 2: I read the first three books of this series in quick succession as they were free in audiobook on Pioneer Overdrive. Short, and pretty realistic, I appreciate how Ben learns a little about himself in each one. There was one scene in the third where he's in a situation with someone that always rubs him the wrong way, and realizes he is acting just like the person he's bothered by and switches course. I liked that. Maybe a little too introspective for his age, but not impossible. I was disappointed to see there were 5 or 6 of these, so I doubt I will finish the series. I'm guessing they will save the school though so... less
