review 1: This is the prequel to Love Means… No Shame but they can be read in any order. I fell in love with Geoff and Eli from No Shame despite the fact that my nitpicking sensibilities were working overtime. It is not exactly the best written novel in the world and neither is this one. But I love them both all the same. Still… nitpicker here. You have been warned. This is the story of how Geoff’s fathers, Cliff and Len, met. This review contains spoilers but not much more than is given away on the back cover. Len has a crush on Cliff and so he becomes a stagehand for the high school production of Grease that Cliff is starring in. Cliff literally falls on top of Len and comments that he could “feel” him which no high school kid would ever say to a potential lover, especia... morelly not one in such denial over his gayness. Anyway, he invites Len to a party at which they are rudely interrupted as they are about to have their first kiss. Len’s best friend is Ruby. Flash forward to five years later.Somehow in the five years since high school Len has gone to college, been laid off from several jobs, Len and Ruby have lost touch for what is described as a considerable amount of time, rekindled their friendship, Ruby has gotten married to Len’s high school crush Cliff, gotten pregnant, had a baby, died, and Len has somehow had time to have his fist fling with another man. On top of that, Len seems extremely knowledgeable for a kid just starting out in life. Logistically, all this could happen in five years but it’s a bit unrealistic. But we’re not concerned with that, are we? Let’s get to the good bits.Len needs a job. Cliff has inherited the farm after his father and wife, Ruby died in a car crash. He has an adorable two year old son, Geoff, who is keeping him occupied. Add that to dealing with his grief and stressing over a financial situation and it’s apparent that Cliff is having difficulty running the farm. He hires Len and…We’ve reached the good bits. Here’s where it gets sweet, romantic and sexy. This is what we’ve come for, isn’t it? I love the characters; I love their world. I wish there weren’t so many typos, reversed words, and repetitive writing. I wish there was more show and less tell. I wish I had counted how many times someone puts a dish or a coffee mug in the sink. I wish there was more sex. I will read this entire series.
review 2: It took me a while to be comfy with reading this story, since I already know how this love story ends, but I bucked up and did it and I wasn't disappointed. I wibbled, but I wasn't disappointed. I loved getting some storytime with Cliff, who we only know from Len and Geoff's memories, especially at a really rough time of his life. Widowed with a young son and a failing farm, Cliff needed Len in his life. I'd say it was a pity that it took them five years after that near kiss, but we wouldn't have Geoff in the picture, so...I'm conflicted. Len came at the right time, and got love and a family for it.We also get a clue as to where Janelle's bitterness may have come from, with her misguided crush on Len. I want to give Grey a hug for not making all of the women in this series as single minded and nasty as this woman was. Thank you, thank you, thank you. less
