review 1: As a fan of the original Conan Doyle stories, when my ten year old son chose this book I asked to borrow it afterwards. He enjoyed it but didn't race through as I expected him to, perhaps because of the romance subplot which wouldn't be his favourite thing. Anyhow, in this sixth instalment of young Sherlock's adventures he lands in Galway, Ireland and is drawn into his brother's attempt to find the truth behind some spirit medium's claims. The logical detective work is there, the cunning disguises and swordplay are there but there's no Watson which I found odd. As a regular visitor to Galway I was also disappointed that despite a research trip the most accurate thing Lane included is the existence of the Spanish Arch and changeable weather. Having said that, it was a quick... more, light read. I might read another at some point but definitely prefer the originals and will introduce my son to those soon.
review 2: This was definitely one of the best of the series. The books just keep getting better! I loved that all of the characters were included in this one with lots of new strange characters making the story really interesting. You feel sorry for Sherlock and how his and Virginia's relationship is now compromised after his long voyage. It was extremely clever how the psychic tricks are explained and the return of one of the baddies from an earlier book was a surprise as well. I loved that Sherlock stayed in one place in this book and that didn't make it any less exciting. Really enjoyed it! less
