review 1: Basically the ideas in the book are fine, and I read it quickly as I sometimes do with books, couldn't put it down. Partly because I kept hoping for something more than it ever really delivered, or maybe could deliver. I found some of the characters a little annoying, and all of them sort of felt invented, unreal, just a vehicle for the lesson/philosophy the author is putting out. Might just be the writing style there. Also it gets a bit preachy, and as a non-christian the quasi-Jesus persona of Jones began to turn me off more and more as the book went on; and as someone who generally doesn't love pop-spirituality (stuff like "The Secret") that seems to promise success and wealth and influence and all that, coming off a bit too saccharine and too often ignoring the Shadow ... morework we all have to do within, I didn't love some of the conclusions. Also, idealizing "the greatest generation" and their parents/grandparents that raised them, sort of sickens me, with the racism, classism, repression of women, and shallow, overly involuted and restrictive culture of the Victorian Era... well, it's easy to glorify the past as a sort of golden age, but it's false. Okay, that said, I more or less enjoyed the book. And ultimately, even if this is sort of pop-spirituality all along, well, there are important messages and truths in it. Perspective really is everything, as is clear and critical thinking, not going along with the rest of the sheeple (being normal), and having a clear goal. I was continually reminded of the quote by Seneca, that said, "If a man knows not to what port he is sailing, no wind is the right wind". To truly investigate what it is we want is a deep rabbit hole that is very productive to go down, though few do the work there. This book is a sort of call to do that work, so I commend it there. I will also say that I was rewarded for reading to the end, even if the book felt a bit slick and packaged, spiritually; for this quote, which is pretty damn good: "Light always trumps darkness. It always has, and it always will. Therefore...if you see that your world is darkening... if you believe that the culture of your nation is growing dimmer by the year...don't blame it on the dark! Darkness is only doing what darkness does. "If darkness is winning the battles, my friend, it is because light is not doing it's job. You are light. So wake up. Wake up."I just hope people do truly wake up and become light, and don't simply cling to some old idea they've been given without the critical thought needed, canned religion or cheap politics.
review 2: This is a must read for every parent. It is the sequel to ‘The Noticer’ and it is certainly just as enlightening makes you think of how your life the choices you made to get where you are and what you can still do to change its path to happiness or not. It is a delightful tale of an old man Jones who comes into the lives of people who need help and how their lives change with a little nudge or two in the right direction. less
