review 1: This book was kind of a mixed bag for me, that left me feeling a bit discombobulated. There were many things I liked about this book, but other things that kept me from giving it a higher rating. The Good:I generally like New Adult, especially when I'm in the mood for something angsty. I especially appreciate New Adult that doesn't completely devolve into cliche territory, so that you can't tell what's different between Book A and Book B. I Want It That Way definitely is not a cliche NA novel, in that the characters aren't especially angst-ridden, despite having some pretty major stuff to deal with at fairly young ages. In some ways, they felt more "real" to me than other New Adult protagonists, and relateable in a way that some aren't.The secondary characters were fleshed ... moreout very well for secondary characters, and I found myself liking all of them for one reason or another. I also thought Sam was a pretty cute kid.The Not So Good:There was a general lack of emotion felt while reading this book. I didn't really feel either character's pain, even though logically I totally "got it." I also didn't feel the sexual tension or attraction between them, either, with the exception of one scene involving what I'm guessing was a Snapchat-like app. For some reason that was the only "sex" scene that actually came across as sexy to me, or where I felt like, oh, yeah, this attraction between them is real. Considering there was a decent amount of sex in the book, I expect a lot more tension and for that tension to be palpable to the reader. For me, as a reader and a writer, not feeling that emotion is a big warning sign, and considerably lessens my enjoyment of a book. Yes, I read it quickly (the writing is definitely fast-paced), but it felt like a quick throwaway read rather than a book I read quickly because I just HAD to know what happened next.Overall, it was a good book and I generally enjoyed it, but I don't know that I'll read the other three in the series unless I'm seriously bored and Amazon's doing a crappy job with recommendations.
review 2: Author Ann Aguirre begins her "2B Trilogy" with "I Want It That Way", a New Adult contemporary romance which took me out of my regular reading box--and I liked it that way! Nadia Conrad and her best friend, Lauren, left small town Sharon, Nebraska behind to attend college in Michigan. Living off-campus, they share an apartment with two friends, Angus and Max. While living in close quarters can be complicated, the four college buddies manage to make it work, and they eventually bond into their own little family unit. Nadia is concentrated on protecting her scholarship, with the hopes of eventually paying back her parents for their sacrifices for her future after she graduates and lands a full-time teaching job. For the time being, she is working hard on her studies and working part-time at a day care center. She shouldn't have time for the handsome, auburn-haired guy with the adorable young son--even if they live just a stone's throw away in the same apartment complex. Daniel Tyler, known as "Ty", became a single dad at just twenty years of age. His girlfriend didn't want to have a baby and become a mother--she wanted to pursue her own dreams for her life. Ty persuaded her to have the baby, but after a short time, she abandoned Ty and their son, Sam. Ty loves Sam very much, and he would never give up his son for any reason, so he struggles to work, study, and be a father. His life is complex, and he has little or no personal time, but that doesn't mean he can't wonder about the beautiful and appealing Nadia. The fact that she loves children and wants to be a special-ed teacher just makes her that much more attractive. Logic tells them not to get involved, but attraction, need, and want will have their way, and soon friendship merges with passion. Each of them has personal issues to resolve, and being together means compromise on both sides. Are they ready to take a chance on love, and on each other? Appealing characters, real-life issues, and a heaping dose of spice and sentiment make “I Want It That Way” an involving read.Review Copy Gratis Amazon Vine less

eh it's not the worst from the 'new adult' genre i've ever read but it's nothing too special either.
