review 1: Really liked it and I would have finished it sooner but life got in the way. This is only the 2nd of Ann Aguire's books that Ive read and I am absolutely going to read more. There was a book before Hell Fire that I havent read yet, but I was able to fully grasp the story without being lost as to who was who, ect. I would definitely recommend these books to those who like the writings of Christine Feehan, Kim Harrison, Jenna Black ect. If you like them, you will like Ann Aguire!
review 2: This book has me thinking about love triangles, specifically the different flavors of love triangles where there are 2 men and 1 woman.1) There are love triangles where you want to see the heroine caught between two men, hopefully sampling them both to some extent. *g* Where yo
... moreu enjoy drawing out the foreplay.2) There are love triangles where you want the happily ever after to involve m/m/f, or at least m/f/m. 3) There are love triangles where your dominant reaction is "just choose already", with either a mild preference as to which man "wins", or maybe no preference at all.4) Then there are love triangles where you feel like guy #2 never had a chance because she'd already (on some level) committed to guy #1. As to this book, this series, it seems to me Jesse never had a chance, because Corrine and Chance belong together. (No pun intended.)The problem with relationships that start off page is the infamous "show, don't tell" philosophy. Chance and Corrine were a couple, and then broke up. And Corrine seems to be clinging to her excuses to keep Chance at arm's length. The problem is, as a reader, I haven't seen any sufficient reason to keep Chance at arm's length. So any romantic involvement on Jesse's part is seriously unwanted. And I'm seriously in the "jump the boy already" camp when it comes to Chance. I typically like a slow build when it comes to romance, but we've entered the picture after a full on relationship. Slow builds after the fact are less appealing. And after the hero gets seriously injured protecting the heroine ... well, again, "jump him already".Now, I say all this realizing this is an urban fantasy series, not paranormal romance. But the relationship is what I'm taking away from the book. Corrine seems to be trying, not to find happiness, but to find the least stressful version of mere contentment. And Chance is bending over backwards to earn himself a second chance. I'd be sending that demon off to Mexico to destroy her little antique shop so she'll make an attempt to live again, not just to continue to simply exist. Her excuses when it comes to Chance's luck are feeling like the "if I leave the house, I might be hit by a bus" type of excuses. It amazes me how different this series feels from the author's "Siratha Jax" series. With that series it feels like the couple is being pulled apart for noble reasons. This feels like the opposite. This feels like Corrine just doesn't want to try hard enough and that bugs the hell out of me. I expect more out of plucky urban fantasy heroines. less
