review 1: Good effort on the author's part but very depressing. Not sure if I would like my middle schooler to read it. It is written for younger readers so the language and the style of writing reflects that. But that this books deals with some very serious issues. It is the story of a boy Jamie who has twin sisters Rose and Jasmine. Rose died 5 years ago in the London Tube bombings. Jamie was 5 when that happened now is 10. The novel is written in his point of view and talks about how his parents are dealing with this loss, his dad has taken to drinking and hating muslims and his mom found someone else and left them. The parents are mourning their dead daughter so much they seem to forget that they still have two more children who need their love and attention. It is a very... more sad and depressing story, there is no hope, just acceptance. Not my cup of tea!
review 2: such an emotional book! I literally could not put it down. it shows exactly how a death can affect a family which I think a lot of people can relate to, so in that respect, I think the book is flawless. what I love about it is the way that it shows things through the eyes of a ten year old who doesn't really understand everything that's going on which makes the reader feel a lot of sympathy to him. it is also told as if a child is giving an account of events, for example when he is telling us of something somebody has said, he uses italics instead of speech marks. I love this book because of the innocence of it. it's wonderful. less
