review 1: If you are a fan of the Sherlock Holmes canon you are doing yourself a disservice if you don't read Mr. Horowitz's work. He writes with the permission of the Arthur Conan Doyle estate, and his previous book, The House of Silk, was wonderful. This short story could have easily been yanked out of The Strand magazine in the late 19th or early 20th century. It goes beyond pastiche and moves into channeling territory. It's astonishing that this gentleman can so wholly capture the tone, spirit, feel, and fun of the original tales. This story, once again narrated by the good Dr. Watson, will seem familiar, but not in a bad way. You will swear that it came from the pen of the originator. I'm looking forward to reading the next book, which is currently out but whose name I have for... moregotten.
review 2: This is the second story by Horowitz that I've read (after House of Silk). The best that can be said for Horowitz's Sherlock Holmes stories is that they really feel like an authentic Sherlock Holmes story, which is no mean feat, especially when compared to other "Sherlockian" attempts. However, while it could be argued House of Silk added a different take to the Holmes story with its focus on the street children (while making perfect sense, the three monarchs is merely another Holmesian adventure. No more, no less. less

Horowitz ist nicht Conan Doyle und das merkt man ganz besonders bei dieser Kurzgeschichte

Captures the Holmes mood but an unexciting read all the same.
