review 1: Forensic criminology in 13th century China is the basis for "The Corpse Reader." Ci Song has to make his way after the death and disgrace of his father. His ability to discern the cause of death (and much about the life) of an individual from his/her corpse brings him to the attention of those in power.Ci Song has a lot to learn about the politics of the time as well as the motivations of the living, and that thread is what dragged on the story. And the fact that there were just too many red herrings. The time and place and characters were well-crafted enough to keep me going. And I will read more by Sr. Garrido.
review 2: I really wanted to enjoy this book but it sucked like a hoover. The main character was a tw*t whom I couldn't care less about and if the
... morere was anything that could go wrong it did, though with no tension to the plot whatsoever. Deus ex machina? Oh, FAR too many. The writing was poor and almost like reading a children's book and the author had evidently never heard of the phrase "show not tell".Avoid this like the plague!!! less

This was a great mystery filled with culture and was set in an exotic local.

Somewhere between 4½ and 5. Think CSI China, without all the gadgets.
