review 1: This was a very interesting book about the man who basically invented forensics back in 11th century China. The cultural details added to the interest. However, the writing often bordered on the melodramatic, as around each corner things were set 'to get much worse.' It would be hard to believe that one person could a) suffer so many major personal tragedies and b) be offered so many chances to realize his dream, which in my understanding was not offered to everyone. And screw it up so many times and then, be offered yet another chance by yet another benefactor.Even so, it was a very good read and if you don't mind gory details, a splendid story.
review 2: I won/ received this novel on a goodreads giveaway!I really enjoyed this novel. It was new and exciting to
... moreme. I especially loved the setting in the 13th century. I am a huge fan of mystery novels. This was such a refreshing read it was like CSI but ancient times. I think fans of many genres would love this read. I do not want to ruin any parts of the story, just know its good. The environments are well done and character development superb.I highly recommend this book! less

This was a fun, quick read. It's a great historical take on the crime/mystery novel.

Artificial plot, thin history. Fun from time to time, and nicely gruesome.
