review 1: To be honest, I read this because it was set in Barcelona, a city I'd visited for the first time recently. That part was a little disappointing - never got much of a feel of the actual city. However, though "marred" by the standard thin-characterization that mysteries tend to have these days, the story itself was intriguing, with three distinct and nasty puzzles to solve (or four, if one were to be truly pedantic). That part was satisfying and very well done. This is the first of a presumed series, so with time, Inspector Salgado and his crew will develop more flesh. And it is a great title.
review 2: This book took me a long time to finish. It's not because I didn't like it, but more because of my procrastinating or my habit of choosing to switch books all of
... morea sudden. I read it halfway through before leaving it on my shelf for a long time, but as soon as I decided to finish it, I was able to slip back into the setting of the book and the story and the characters as if I had not actually stopped reading at any moment. The point is, I consider this the result of the author's skill, which are not few. He makes an interesting, surprising, twisting thriller that does not disappoint, even when the ending becomes another twist on what you already thought was solved. The central mystery gets resolved, yes, but Hill finds a way make way for a second book, which, by the way, I have not read either. Not yet, at least. less
