review 1: I gave up at page 65. As others have mentioned here, the plot moves along slowly, which I can live with if in the context of an otherwise well put together story. But while I liked the setting and the plot set-up seemed intriguing, I had serious problems with the way the author's often pointless, stilted dialogue. The author (or perhaps the translator -- I read the English version) is in need of an editor with a sharper pencil. Also, there are scenes in the book where the inner thoughts or motivations of multiple characters are portrayed, despite the specific scene being from the perspective of only one of the characters. On top of that, the author (or translator) uses the no-no of appending characters' lines with phrases like "'---', she lied." or "'---', he ventured." To... moreo frustrating for this reader. Too much to cringe at, frankly.
review 2: I have never read The Summer of Dead Toys book one of the Inspector Hector Salgado books. However I have seen it around and thought about checking it out. Thus when I saw this book and read the premise of it, I thought ok now is the time to finally check this author out. I do have to say that I did like this author. I think Ms. Hill does have a good talent for writing and telling a good story. I did like this book. What I did not like was that even though the chapters and sections were quick reading, the overall story itself was kind of lacking in drama and had a lot of conversation and thus it made for a slow moving story. After a while I did find myself sort of skimming the rest of the book. The ending was fine. less
