review 2: This was a stop and go book for me. I had to put it down, read something else, and then get back into it, which is fine... I don't mind reading books like that, but I think that there is a reason that that happened with this particular book. It'a no
... moret that Hill did a bad job, or the story wasn't interesting, it was just that there was so much of it. One plot line tied into another, and so on and so forth. I was also totally confused by all the characters and the many names that were used. I probably should have kept notes, but I don't usually read that way. Hill moved from last names to first names and back and forth pretty easily and that honestly just made me a little more confused, overall. I like the storyline overall. There is a twist at the end, which is actually pretty solid, I just felt that Hill could have gotten there a bit quicker, and that would have been a bit better from a readers perspective. In fact, there are 2 twists that make the ending worth the read, and then he goes and adds an additional chapter that seemingly is there to set up a sequel, but has no real impact on the story that we just read. I get that series, especially detective series, are the thing, but there has to be a better way of leaving your main character at the end. The bombshell that Hill leaves us is a little insulting, and basically it's like putting a drumstick on the table, and then telling your guests to have the whole turkey. There has to be a subtler way to introduce an additional conflict rather than dropping it full force on out laps like Hill does. Aside from those minor complaints, The Summer of Dead Toys was interesting, engaging, and was a full novel, with a few missteps here and there. Overall, not bad. less

Great Read. Mesmerizing plot. Flawed, but believable characters.

Many plot twists kept me guessing until the end. A good mystery.
