review 1: I've just finished and find that I'm having a hard time decided what I really think of this story. There are so many things happening, true friends, extreme loss, a family curse, love, guilt, and triumph. Whew quite a heady brew.I enjoyed the friendship between Gristle and Jay but though Gristle was an interesting character he was also one that I didn't quite understand... example: the shoe in the zoo episode. I understand that people should LIVE their lives, but why do some people believe the only way to LIVE their life is to RISK it?? I guess that is the reason I don't understand why people climb mountains or parachute from airplanes. And the Thoth's confession when he confronted Jay at the theatre was just gut wrenching and I'm surprised that Jay could function afte... morer hearing the awful news.Loved the story and I'll have to re-read this one to truly appreciate all the layers.
review 2: (Un)masked was the kind of book that made me intentionally going passed my train stop just so I could read a little bit more. And then a little more. It's so addicting. The book pulled me in with the mystery and the complications of the characters. Jay was someone I can relate to, Lethe was someone I would like to know more of, and Gristle was like a big bear brother whom you know will always got your back. They felt very real with their problems (yes, despite the fantasy aspect of the book). I like how they interacted with each other. The conflicts, drama, and romance are also perfectly made. The bits and pieces of the New Zealand culture was also a big bonus for me, as I don't know much about it (but very much would love to).All in all, it's such a page turner for me, definitely more than most of the book I've read this year.I would recommend this book if you like romance with a fantasy - mystery twist. It's a very good one at that! Also, just an FYI, all of the main characters are male. less
