review 1: Sayre, April P. Rah, Rah, Radishes!: A Vegetable Chant. New York: Beach Lane Books, 2011. Print. 32 p. Young children will discover vegetables in this fun and simple book. Vibrant colors on the pages along with in the photographs of various vegetables accompany a “vegetable chant”. A poem picture book format is used intended to be read to a beat. Photographs of carrots, cabbages, bok choy, peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussells sprouts, green beans, lettuce, and other vegetables, familiar and unique are taken in produce stands or grocery store displays. At the end of the book, information about vegetables, such as the definition, advice on cooking them, and names of other vegetables that do not appear in the book is given. Preschool and kindergarten children are th... moree best audience for this title. As an extension, encourage readers to taste some of the vegetables found in the book. Lesser-known options such as kohlrabi and bok choy are good choices to have prepared for a tasting after reading the book.
review 2: Man, I love my farmers' market and April Pulley Sayre's book captures the beauty of the veggies I see on my Sunday market visits. With enthusiasm and brilliant color, this book really is a cheer for vegetables. This is a great choice to use with healthy eating units and it will be a great fit with a short unit that I use with my Kindergarten students. Recommended for preschool and kindergarten students. A warning though -- there are a LOT of vegetables in this book and many readers, even adults, may not be familiar with all of them. less

Probably would have enjoyed it more if I was reading (chanting) it with a small child. Oh, well.
