review 1: Is it because Indridason is writing in a slightly different genre than his Erlendur mysteries, or is it the translator? The narrative is clunky, at times -- it doesn't flow. This is one of those times when I wish I could read the original language so that I would know for sure that the translation is smart and true.A heroine who is irritating, impatient and too often thoughtless and impulsive -- not smart enough to fully assess the situations she finds herself in. There are bad guys, certainly, but none with any redeeming qualities, no humanity that gives them their edge and some interest for the reader.Conspiracy theories and the Ugly American personae abound, but none of the theories are terribly convincing, nor do the Americans interest the reader. Two-dimensional ... morecharacterizations at best.I kept waiting for that moment to grab me when all the implications would become clear. The first chapter piqued my curiosity and set me up for a good read. That didn't last long.I truly do not like to give reviews like this. Indridason's Erlendur novels are so enjoyable. That's why I tend to question the translator. I found myself editing throughout the whole novel.
review 2: An intriguing thriller set in Iceland that keeps the pace up throughout to a great ending. The US have been searching since WW2 for an aircraft that crashed into a glacier with a dark secret . Satellite shows the wreck had reappeared however the US doesn't want the locals nosing around I understand that the author also writes detective novels so I might have a try with one of those on the basis of this book. less
