review 1: Not as good as the earlier books in this series. There didn't seem to be as much depth in the story then everything was explained in a rush at the end. Even then, the explanation was laboured. There was a struggle to make something of racial prejudice in the motive but it seems not a huge issue in Iceland. The motive, when revealed, is probably what motivates many murders but in a novel it was a bit of a let-down.
review 2: It's not the story but how it's told. The story is about police figuring out who murdered a child walking home from school in Reykjavik, Iceland. The boy is half Icelandic and half Thai, so the inspector delves into race relations, school and sibling tensions, vandalism, and the inspector's own guilt for his brother's death when he was a chi... moreld. Perhaps it was the translator, but the story lacks the depth, psychological insight and mood of Swedish and Danish mystery writers. less
